Abstract:

Snapshots and portraits of families related to Ogden or relevant to the history of Berkeley, Calif., and snapshots of Berkeley near the turn of the 20th century. Some may be photographs Ogden collected out of historical interest, but most seem connected to his Harder relations. Folder 1: an undated newsclipping obituary of Frederick [Johann Joachim] Ludwig Harder (1822-1911), and nine photographs of Harder family members: Paula Bossell Davis; aviator Steve Botts; and likely Harder/Ogden relations in Berkeley or the San Francisco Bay Area -- Folder 2: portrait of Paul Spenger, 1910; a large group portrait of the Frederick Johann Joachim Ludwig Harder family, about 1899 (copy photograph only; with Bossell, Grebs, Ogden, and Spenger relations including John Evangelist Spenger); a Mr. Doble displaying small items for sale in a carrying case (copy photography only); a photo of caricature drawings on a board by Maurice Del Mue of other artists at Foster & Kleiner art department, including Roi Partridge and Maynard Dixon; women in a sculpture studio of the California School of Arts and Crafts, with a model portraying Christ on the cross, about 1914 -- Folder 3: "Souvenir of Mount Lowe California" (printed card containing souvenir photograph of railway visitors that include Ted and Alice Russi of Concord, Calif.) -- Folder 4: snapshots of Berkeley, Calif. including a small West Berkeley delicatessen and bakery (probably belonging to Carl Harder), Berkeley back yards, and seven views of the aftermath of the 1923 Berkeley fire

Frederick Johann Joachim Ludwig Harder (1822-1911) was a Berkeley, Calif. resident at least 23 years prior to his death in October 1911. He was born in Berlin, and served in the German military in 1846 and 1848. His two sons were Carl Harder, Berkeley grocer, and Frederick Harder, lithographer in Philadephia, and his daughters were Emma Spenger, Herminie Grebs, Bertha Bossell, and Anna Ogden of Berkeley.
